Melvin Leroy Cole, 94, of Findlay, Ohio went to his heavenly home on Thursday, July 28, 2022 at Birchaven Care Center. He was born in Wyandot County, Ohio on April 29, 1928 to Albert and Ola (Kennedy) Cole.
After graduation, Melvin served his country in the United States Army as SFC Melvin L. Cole E. Co. 2nd Bn. 27th Reg. 25th Infantry Division, on the frontline with hand-to-hand combat during the Korean War. He married Doris Kring on February 18, 1951. Melvin and Doris shared a love of fishing at Esnagi Lake in Ontario, Canada and of traveling by car and by bus while being blessed with over 71 years of marriage and three sons.
Melvin was an exceptional man- hard-working, humble, and kind. He was also a beloved father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He supported his family by farming for almost forty years, including growing peanuts in Georgia. He retired at the young age of 84 from Birchaven Village (formerly Winebrenner) as a maintenance technician after 34 years. He attended Trinity Baptist Church and was a member of the #172 Korean War Veterans Association.
Melvin is survived by his wife; sons Gregory (Vicki) Cole of Findlay and Gary (Brenda) Cole of Six Mile, South Carolina; grandchildren Andrew (Jodi) Cole and Sarah (Brad) Sorn; great-grandchildren Evan Sorn, Levi Sorn, and Oliver Cole; brothers Foster (Beverly) Cole of Mount Blanchard and Everett (Karen) Cole of New Castle, Indiana; sisters Barbara Van Horn of Auburn,Indiana, Annabelle Cole of Findlay, Clarabelle (Richard) Van Horn of Celina, and Carolyn (Edward) Thomas of Findlay; sister-in-law Sabra Cole of Avon Lake; and many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded by his infant son, Bradley Cole; great-grandchild Lincoln Cole; brothers Donald (Charlotte) Cole and Herbert Cole; brother-in-law Jim Van Horn; and half-sister Virginia (Ralph) Fields.
The family will receive friends from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm on Monday, August 1, 2022 at Coldren-Crates Funeral Home, 205 West Sandusky Street, Findlay, Ohio with a service beginning at 3:00 pm, officiated by Pastor Benjamin Jennings. He will be laid to rest in Maple Grove Cemetery. Full military rites will be conducted by the Hancock County Veteran Memorial Squad. Online condolences may be shared at www.coldrencrates.com.
