Bernard James "Bud" Berkebile

1922 - 2019

Bernard James "Bud" Berkebile, 97, of Findlay passed away on Sunday, September 29, 2019 at The Heritage, surrounded by his loving family. Bud was born on January 29, 1922 in Johnstown, PA to the late Harold C. and Margaret J. (Hughes) Berkebile. On December 16, 1978, Bud married Mary L. Cramer in Hollywood, CA and she survives. He is also survived by his son and daughter from a previous marriage: Lynn B. Berkebile and Sherri A. DeWolf, both of Idaho; and a niece, Barbara. He is also survived by 17 nieces and nephews, 37 great-nieces and nephews, and 37 great-great-nieces and nephews. Bud was preceded in death by two brothers: Edward and Harold Berkebile; and three sisters: Mary J. Resley, Dorothy J. Fornes, and Margaret M. O'Donnell. Bud graduated from Johnstown Catholic High School. He served his country proudly in the U.S. Army during WWII, taking part in the D-Day Invasion of the European theater, where he received the Purple Heart and the Combat Infantry Badge. Bud also received the Legion of Honor Medal and because of this, he is called Sir Bud by the French. After leaving the Army, Bud served as the Fire Chief in Johnstown, PA for 25 years before moving to California, where he was a Postal Carrier for several years before retiring in 1985. Bud enjoyed watching TV and loved football. His favorite teams were the Pittsburgh Steelers and Michigan State. Visitation for Bud will be held from 3:00-7:00pm on Wednesday, October 2, 2019 at COLDREN-CRATES FUNERAL HOME, and for one hour (12:30-1:30pm) prior to the service. A funeral service will begin at 1:30pm on Thursday, October 3, 2019 at COLDREN-CRATES FUNERAL HOME with Pastor Gordon Dickson, David Quick, and Rev. Steven Merrin officiating. Burial will follow in Maple Grove Cemetery, where full military rites will be conducted by the Hancock County Veterans Memorial Squad. Memorial contributions can be made to Calvary Baptist Church.
