John Paul Sutherland, was born on October 23, 1926, at Homeworth, Ohio, Knox Township, Columbiana County, near Alliance, Ohio. The seventh and last child of The Reverend Roy Lawrence Carver Sutherland and Gertrude Sarah (Camp) Sutherland. His death occurred on January 7, 2021. His siblings are: James Warren Sutherland (Deceased), Ralph Eugene Sutherland (Deceased), Evelyn Gertrude Hughes (Deceased), Robert William Sutherland (Deceased), Roy Lawrence Sutherland, Jr. (Deceased) and Alice Leola Dumm (Deceased). He received his public education at the following schools: West Salem, Canton, Independence, Warren and Marion, Ohio. He graduated from Marion Harding High School, Marion, Ohio on June 2, 1944. He completed four years of College Education, from Asbury College, Wilmore, Kentucky, and received his Bachelor of Arts degree on June 2, 1948. He was licensed to preach by The Evangelical United Brethren Church, at Findlay, Ohio on August 22, 1947. On June 6, 1948, at The Calvary Evangelical United Brethren Church in Marion, Ohio, he was united in Marriage to Lavina Mae Strine. He was assigned to his first pastorate at The Ohio East Conference of the EUB Church to The Blissfield Circuit in Cochocton County, Ohio, and served there from 1948 to 1950. During this pastorate, J. Paul and Lavina were blessed with the birth of their son, Philip Eugene, born at The Joel Pomerene Memorial Hospital in Millersburg, Ohio. He was next appointed Pastor of The Brownhelm-South Ridge EUB Churches near Elyria, Ohio, in June 1950. He served these churches through 1956, during which time he attended The Graduate School of Theology, Oberlin College, Oberlin, Ohio, graduating with The Bachelor of Divinity Degree, on June 14, 1954. He was Ordained as an Elder of The Evangelical United Brethren Church (Now United Methodist), at The Ohio-East Conference, held at Linwood Park, Vermilion, Ohio on June 16, 1948. His first full time Pastorate started when he was assigned to The First Evangelical United Brethren Church, Delta, Ohio on August 1957. He pastored this church until June 1960. During these years, Twin Daughters, Cynthia Lee and Candace Lynn were born to J. Paul and Lavina on November 14, 1957, at The Detwiler Memorial Hospital, Wauseon, Ohio. At The Ohio-Sandusky Conference of The EUB Church, Camp St. Mary's, Ohio, in June 1960, J. Paul was assigned to The Woodville EUB Church, Woodville, Ohio. This Pastorate continued for 10 years until June 1970. In the year 1968, The EUB Church united with The Methodist Church to become The United Methodist Denomination. J. Paul was elected Conference Secretary, at The 135th Annual Session of The Ohio-Sandusky Conference of The United Methodist Church, held at Camp St. Marys, in June 1968, for a four year term. A new phase in His ministry began in June 1970, after 22 years of Pastoral work, when he and the Sutherland family moved to Findlay, Ohio to begin ownership of The Christian Gift and Book Store on North Main Street. This ownership continued for 19 years, when He and Lavina retired in the fall of 1989. During those years, a New Book Store Building was built at 438 Tiffin Avenue. J. Paul and Lavina suffered the loss of their son, Dr. Philip Eugene Sutherland, M.D., when he died from injuries in an auto accident in Brandon, Florida, on March 20, 1990. He was 40 years old. In His retirement years spent in Winter Haven, Florida, J. Paul served as The Assistant Pastor and Liturgist of The Carefree Christian Chapel, Carefree Country Club. This service of ministry took place from 1991 through 1999. They returned to Findlay to continue their retirement year in June 2000. J. Paul and Lavina's daughters, Cynthia Lee (Mrs. L. Brent Houck) and Candace Lynn, (Mrs. Dwayne Beach) continue their residence in Findlay. The J. Paul Sutherland's have been blessed with five Grandson's namely, Jamie (Sarah) Houck, Greer, South Carolina, Justin (Sharon) Houck, Ballwin, Missouri, Joshua (Lisa) Houck, Findlay, Ohio, Kevin (Kim) Beach, Van Buren, Ohio, and Jason Beach, Findlay, Ohio. They also have been given six beautiful Great-Granddaughters, namely; Sharadon Brooke Heath, Reese Elizabeth, Reagan Ava, Lilian Marie, Liana Grace, and Laney Leigh Houck, and one Great Grandson, named Clayton Eugene Beach. It was the privilege of Pastor J. Paul to officiate the Marriage Ceremonies of his twin daughters and also four of the five Grandsons. On September 25, 2016, Lavina, his wife of 68 years, passed from this life to her Eternal Home. The body will be cremated and interned at Knollcrest Gardens, Arcadia, Ohio. Arrangements have been entrusted to COLDREN-CRATES FUNERAL HOME, Findlay, Ohio. J. Paul has been a member of The St. Marks United Methodist Church in Findlay, since September 19, 1976.
