Shelia L Evans

1932 - 2020

printable version

Shelia L Evans, 87, of Findlay, passed away at her residence with family by her side on Tuesday, October 6, 2020. Shelia was born on October 24, 1932 to the late Alonzo "Lonnie" and Fannie (Newton) Brumback. Shelia moved to Ohio from the hills of Kentucky when she was just 9 years old. Soon after, in 5th grade, she met Bill, who would later become her husband. In high school, she was lead cheerleader and graduated Valedictorian at Middle Point High, Class of 1950. On March 28, 1953, she married her grade school sweetheart, William Roger Evans, and he preceded her in death on September 18, 2007. Surviving Shelia are her children, Jeffrey (Yancey Allison) Evans, of Como, MS and Audrey L. (Grant) Davis of Findlay, OH; her grandchildren, Erica (Adam) Bachorik of Toledo, OH and Jared Davis of Findlay, OH, along with many beloved nieces and nephews. As the second youngest of 11 children, she is preceded in death by 5 brothers and 5 sisters. Shelia has a heart of giving to others. She led a career as a librarian that first started as a volunteer at Washington Elementary where she gave her time for 8 years, establishing the library through book donations that filled only a small shelf. Shelia grew the book stacks, creating the Washington Elementary Library over the next 27 years as a library aid. Recognition was common for Shelia. The school honored Shelia's dedication to education and named the library she worked so hard to build, The Shelia L. Evans Library. One of her proudest accomplishments was the monthly school event, "Library Night", where families gathered together to read books and discover the joy of reading. Shelia and Bill were both MAZZA Museum enthusiasts, and she was also a docent, giving tours for scheduled events. Shelia then retired from education to become a more integral part of her grandkids' life. Aside from the joy of her grandchildren, Shelia also enjoyed puzzles, gardening, time with family at the lake, and good country music. A private funeral service for family and special friends will be held at COLDREN-CRATES FUNERAL HOME, Findlay, OH on Friday October 9, 2020 with Pastor Jeff Motter presiding. Burial to follow at Maple Grove Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, friends who wish may contribute in memory of Shelia to Mazza Museum, 1000 North Main Street Findlay Ohio 45840; St. Andrew's United Methodist Church, 120 West Sandusky Street, Findlay, Ohio 45840 or Bridge Home Health & Hospice, 15100 Birchaven Lane, Findlay, Ohio 45840. Dear Audrey and Jeff,
I was saddened to read of your mother passing. She was a very special lady. I enjoyed and appreciated her friendship through the years we spent working together at Washington Elem. She loved people, especially children, as evidenced by the library she created over the years at Washington. She will be missed by all those who had the privilege to know her. My thoughts and prayers are with you both.
Sincerely,
Keith Mohr

Mrs. Evans library at Washington School was a safe haven for me as a child. I was always greeted with a smile and a kind word and I always felt listened to. I am grateful to have had such a warm and caring person in my life at that time. She was the best and I'll always have fond memories of her. She was so good to my mother as well. I am grateful for her life and feel sad that she is gone, but knowing she is in a wonderful place and reunited with her husband and others who have passed, including my mother, helps. Love to the family.

Hello Audrey,
As a Washington School first and second grade teacher, I have fond memories of visiting the library. Sheila was always prepared to show us new and interesting books and gave lessons on their proper care as well.

I ‘ll always remember when the family came to my class at Whittier because Erica was in my first grade class.
I am so sorry for your loss but please know that your mom brought happiness to many.
