Merle was born on April 12, 1941, in Hardin County to the late Dwight and Amy (Barnes) McDaniel. He married Janet (Bishop) McDaniel, on July 31, 1970 at St. Marks United Methodist Church, Findlay, Ohio. They would have been married 50 years and she survives. Also, surviving are their children, Amy (Jason) Wilkerson and Shawn (Lori) McDaniel; grandchildren Brice and Heidi McDaniel, Lincoln, Lane, and Lauren Wilkerson; Sisters: Joan Walters, Linda (Ed) Garey and Sharon (Harold) Myers. Brother: Gene McDaniel. Sister-in-laws: Marlene McDaniel and Barb McDaniel and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by brothers, Jim and John McDaniel. Merle was a 1960 graduate of Mt. Blanchard High School. Merle retired from Magnesium Electron (Spectrulite Consortium) in 2008, and had formerly worked at Dow Chemical for over 20 years. He enjoyed bowling, golfing, salmon fishing every year in Michigan with his co-workers, and taking cruises with friends and family. He loved watching the Van Buren Black Knight athletic teams. He was a big Notre Dame fan, but he especially enjoyed and loved his five grandchildren. He was a member of the Van Buren United Methodist Church. The family is grateful for the loving care he received at The Heritage Nursing Home, Bridge Hospice Care Center, and all the prayers from his church family and friends. Visitation for Merle will be held at COLDREN CRATES FUNERAL HOME on Sunday, July 26, 2020 from 1:00pm-6:00pm. The funeral services will be Monday, July 27, 2020 at 11:00am with Pastor Kelly A. Dear Janet and family, We are saddened to hear about Merle. We were unable to attend yesterday because Steve was involved in a tragic boating accident on Friday. He is okay but one guy did not make it. We will catch up with you at a later date.

How saddened we were when we saw in the paper that Merle had passed. We know that the family has suffered the last period of time with what Merle so bravely fought, and we hope that as he is laid to rest and as the family grieves all remembers the good and happy times. I will miss the neighbor chats and the help we gave each other.Rest in peace my friend. Heartfelt condolences Janet to you and your fine family.

Janet, you have my very deepest condolence in the death of your husband!! I wish you could have celebrated your 50th anniversary. I didn't realize that you were married shortly after Delton & I got married on April 25, 1970. Love you - and Cathy.
