printable version

Maxine Copus, 86, passed away at her home while surrounded by family on Sunday, May 24, 2020. She fought a short, but courageous battle with cancer and left this world peacefully and with grace. Maxine was born in Bairdstown, Ohio on June 21, 1933, to Merle and Agnes Santmire (Starr) and attended Bloomdale High School. In 1947, Maxine married her husband, John L., who survives her. They would go on to share 73 years together and raised their two daughters and a son in Findlay. Instilled with a strong work ethic, Maxine spent many years working at some of Findlay’s top employers, including National Automotive Fibers, Inc. and RCA. She retired in 1996. Maxine enjoyed many winters in Fort Myers, Florida where she spent countless hours shelling and just sitting with friends by the pool. She also cherished spending time with her family, particularly around the holidays. Maxine is survived by her husband, John L. Copus, and three children: John E. Copus, Debra (Billy) Oliphant, and Diana (Joseph) Kirk. Also surviving her is a sister, Martha White, six grandchildren, and eleven great grandchildren. A granddaughter, Ashley Copus, and two brothers—Donald Santmire and James Santmire—preceded her in death, as did her parents. A private funeral service will be held at the COLDREN-CRATES FUNERAL HOME in Findlay, with burial to follow at the Maple Grove Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions in Maxine’s name be made to the Findlay Masonic Lodge, 303 Osborn Ave, Findlay, OH 45840. Online condolences may be expressed via: www.coldrencrates.com. The family wishes to extend its sincere appreciation to Bridge Hospice and Med1Care for their outstanding care and support in the final days of Maxine’s life. They came into her home as strangers but left as dear friends.

Maxine was a good friend. John, their children and their families are a tribute to the care Maxine showed to them, and to me. We spent many happy hours around the pool reminiscing and talking about our families while we relaxed under the Florida sun. I hold these memories in my heart. I will miss her. Mary Scatena
