Mark J. Hochstettler

1956 - 2019

printable version

Mark Hochstettler, 62, of Findlay, met his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ face-to-face on Wednesday, March 13, 2019. He was born on November 28, 1956, in Quito, Ecuador, to the late missionaries J. Robert and Felda (Carnes) Hochstettler. He married Kay Lynn Lanning on June 1, 1985, and she survives. Mark worked many years in the pet and lawn care industry, and was the fourth generation of his family to own a business at 428 West Main Cross Street, called “Hochstettler’s Old Mill” when he was the proprietor. Mark graduated from Taylor University in Upland, Indiana, with a degree in business. Mark was a faithful follower of Christ, and found joy in serving others. He lived by I Peter 3:15: “Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect.” He enjoyed studying the Bible, restoring old Volkswagens, and working outdoors, but most of all he loved spending time with his family. He and his wife, daughters, and sons-in-law recently returned from a vacation to Ecuador. Mark is survived by his wife Kay Lynn; and daughters: Chelsea (Andrew) Steinman, and Andrea (Caleb) Phipps. He is also survived by his sisters: Linda (Ron) Wolery, and Bonnie (Mark) Olson; as well as his father-in-law and mother-in-law: William and Anita Lanning; sister-in-law, Shari (Lanning) Romick; and many much-loved nieces and nephews. Visitation for family and friends will be on Friday, March 15, from 2:00-4:00pm and 6:00-8:00pm, at COLDREN-CRATES FUNERAL HOME, Findlay. A memorial service will be held at Cedar Creek Church on Saturday, March 16, beginning at 11:00am with Pastor Chris Baney officiating. Burial will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery, Findlay. Memorial contributions in Mark’s name may be made to Cedar Creek Church, or to the Family in c/o Coldren-Crates Funeral Home. Online condolences may be expressed at www.coldrencrates.com.

We have know Mark for over 20 yrs . We bought out pet food from both stores for many years. After he retired from Legacy, Mark took care of all our lawn needs. He was a wonderful man with a caring heart. We will sorely miss his smile and kind disposition. May God hold you all in his arms thru your hard time of loss. May Marks wings spread wide.

My heart is so sad for all the entire families. Growing up @ StMarks UMC the Hochstetler's were truly family. My mom Marjorie Otto Elder was friends w the Hochstetler men in the 40's. Mark's sister Bonnie was born afew hours after me into the next day, so we each had our own day. Mark & I spent many hours in several Bible studies together. His knowledge of the Bible was amazing. He would be reciting scripture as tho reading it, but I'd notice he wasn't even in the book he was quoting. He was just that knowledged. Never acting as if holding that much wealth of wisdom inside. Mark- I'll miss your smile, your polite voice, & sincere "how are you"?

Dear Kay, Andrea, Chelsea
I knew Mark from many years ago, I used to delivery straw to his business when he owned Hochstettler’s Old Mill. Caring and kind, he would always take time to stop what he was doing to talk with me. When he found out I had lost my job, he hired me to work at the business until I could get back into the line of work I was looking for. I lost touch with him over the years, but was able to reconnect with him when my daughter and son in-law, Kristin & Jacob West, started attending Cedar Creek in Findlay and my wife and I did likewise. I enjoyed chatting with him on a regular basis and will miss him dearly. May God bless you and comfort you during this time of grief.

We were so sad to hear about Hoss. What a wonderful, loving, fun Christian man and a great friend. He will be missed so much!

We have so many wonderful memories of Mark and the Philos class. We are so grateful to have seen him at the class reunion a couple of years ago. One of the things we remember most about Mark was his heart and love for Jesus. When Mark spoke, it was time to listen because he always had something insightful to say. We wish we could have recorded what he shared that day of our class reunion, but the one phrase we do remember him saying is “finish strong.”. Well Mark, you finished strong and our lives we the better for knowing you. Enjoy your time in the presence of God. We will see you soon.
