Arlyn P. Grooms June 14, 1921 – January 29, 2019 Arlyn Porter Grooms, of Findlay, Ohio, passed away on January 29th, 2019 at Sunrise Senior Living of Findlay, at the age of 97 ½ years. He was born on June 14, 1921 to Ottis and Nellie Sheeley Grooms in New Vienna, Ohio. He married Emma Olena Bjork on April 15, 1949 in Cambridge, Ohio. She preceded him in death on August 24, 1998. His parents and a brother, Glenroie (Dorothy) Grooms, of Columbus, Ohio, also preceded him in death. After growing up in southern Ohio, Arlyn attended Bliss College of Business in Columbus, Ohio. He served in the US Army during WWII from 1942 to 1946. Overseas, he served as clerk in the Headquarters Company with the 593rd Engineer Boat and Shore Regiment in New Guinea, the Philippines, and Borneo, and acted as Sgt. Major for a time. In 1948, he began a 30-year career as an agent with the Internal Revenue Service, serving in the Findlay office. He and Emma remained in Findlay and raised their family. In retirement, Arlyn was a part-time self-employed tax consultant. Arlyn was a member of both St. Andrews United Methodist Church and the B.P.O Elks Club for over 50 years. He was a founder and president of the Hancock County Chapter of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees. Arlyn was a quiet man with a clever sense of humor and a kind smile. He planned many fun camping and traveling summer vacations for his young family, and he was especially good at fixing anything around the house and building things for his young daughters, including snow men, sand boxes, stilts, and doll houses. As a father, he was a teacher of lessons, holder of hands, and teller of jokes, a caring giver, financial role model, and wonderful provider. He loved watching his grandsons grow up. And as with many of his generation, Arlyn was frugal, patriotic, faithful, and hard working. His hobbies were genealogy, tinkering, and playing cards and an occasional pool game. He was dearly loved by his wife, daughters, and grandsons. Arlyn is survived by three daughters, Patty (Robert) James of Findlay, Karen Beltz of Dayton, and Nancy (Ken) Claypool of Marshall, Illinois, and five grandsons, Matthew (Molly) Harris of Seattle, WA, Benjamin (Courtney Baxter) Harris of Columbus, OH, Tyler (Tara) Claypool and Ethan (Aubrey) Claypool of Marshall, IL, and Ryan (Abby Blank) Claypool of Portland, OR. He had 10 great-grandchildren: Wilder and Emerson Harris, Zada Harris, Carsyn Day, Milo, Oakley and Ivy Claypool, Colby and Sadie Claypool, and Willa Claypool. Visitation will take place on Tuesday, February 5, 2019 at COLDREN-CRATES FUNERAL HOME, Findlay, Ohio, from 9:00am to 11:00am, followed by a funeral service at 11:00am. Rev. Jeff Motter of St. Andrews UM Church will officiate. Burial will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery in Findlay, OH, beside his wife. In lieu of flowers, his family requests donations in Arlyn’s name to The Alzheimer’s Association or St. Andrews United Methodist Church at 120 W. Sandusky St., Findlay, Ohio 45840.
