Robert E. “Gene” Schoonover, Sr, 88, passed away on March 4, 2019 at 2:20 pm at his home in Benton Ridge, surrounded by his family. He was born in Benton Ridge to Clair and Golda (Young) Schoonover on April 27, 1930. Gene married Mary Lou (Kennedy) on February 8, 1957 in Benton Ridge, Ohio. Gene is survived by his wife, Mary Lou, and sons: Robert (Gail), Kevin (Anita), Mike (Teri Coy); daughter, Kathy; special niece, Shari Schoonover; his grandchildren: Tony (Kelly), Jonathan (Kimberly), Cody, Jarod, Jacob (Josie), Joshua (Marissa), and Teale (Aaron); great-grandchildren: Jack, Lincoln, Cordelia, Owen, and Baby S (due in July); brothers-in-law: Clifford Peterson, and Marvin Kennedy; and his niece, Karen Crawford. He was preceded in death by two sisters: Doris Peterson, and Janet Wilson. Gene was a graduate of Liberty High School in 1948. He was in the U.S. Army and served in Japan during the Korean War. After returning home, Gene went to work for Evans Tractor Supply, then he went to Streackers Tractor Sales where he retired after 30 years. Gene finished his working career of 10 years at Liberty Benton School as Bus Mechanic and Groundskeeper. In his spare time, Gene loved to hunt, fish, and camp at Indian Lake, Sault Ste. Marie, and St. Augustine. At the age of 70, he bought a motorcycle and enjoyed many trips to Michigan and the Blue Ridge Mountains with his sons. Gene’s favorite pastime was taking his pug, Misty, on golf cart rides around the park. The family would like to thank Palliative Care, Home Health, Hospice, Dr. D. Houston, and Dr. J. Lamancusa. Visitation will be on Wednesday, March 6, 2019 from 4:00-8:00 p.m. at COLDREN-CRATES FUNERAL HOME, Findlay. The funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Thursday, March 7, 2019 at the funeral home with Pastors Richard Hiltibran and Kimberly Reese officiating. Burial will follow in Benton Ridge Cemetery where full military rites will be conducted by the Hancock County Veterans Memorial Squad. Memorials can be given in Gene’s memory to the Good Shepherd United Methodist Church in Benton Ridge, where Gene was a member for 62 years. Online condolences may be made to www.coldrencrates.com.
