1932 - 2016

printable version

Dr. Reverend Clinton Darrell Prichard, 84, of Findlay, Ohio, went home to be with his Lord on Thursday, June 16, 2016 at 11:52 p.m. Darrell was born in Frankclay, Missouri on April 5, 1932 to Sylvester and Viola (Price) Prichard. Darrell grew up in Leadwood, Missouri, graduating from Leadwood High School in 1950. Darrell attended what was then called Findlay College, graduating in 1955 with a Bachelor of Science degree, while also serving as President of his graduating class. Darrell went on to attend Winebrenner Theological Seminary, graduating in 1959 with a Bachelor of Divinity degree. On September 5, 1953, he married the love of his life, Alberta Bowen at the Leadwood First Church of God, in Leadwood, Missouri. Darrell pastored the Wayne Church of Christ in Wayne, Ohio from 1953 to 1955. In 1956, Darrell and Alberta moved to Risingsun, Ohio, where he became the pastor of the Risingsun First Church of God. Darrell led that congregation in the construction of a new church building, and continued in the role of pastor there until 1965. It was at that time that Darrell was named the pastor of the Mt. Tabor Church of God in Nappanee, Indiana, serving in that capacity until 1973. Darrell then became the Associate Administrator of the Churches of God, General Conference, which was headquartered in Findlay, Ohio. During his tenure in the administrative offices of the denomination, he traveled extensively to Venezuela and Haiti, where he was instrumental in the growth of Project HELP, as well as ministering on the Navajo Reservations in New Mexico. Darrell left the administrative offices in 1980 to resume his role as pastor when he became the Senior Pastor at College First Church of God in Findlay, maintaining that position until 1993. Darrell was “back home,” as the church sits adjacent to the campus of The University of Findlay. As pastor at College First, he was also chaplain for the university’s football team, spending many Saturdays at Donnell Stadium with the coaches and players. In 1980 Darrell was also honored by The University of Findlay with an Honorary Doctorate degree. In 1993, Darrell left the pastorate to become the Administrator of the Ohio Conference, Churches of God. He served in that capacity for seven years. It was in this role that Darrell became a mentor to the many pastors in the denomination throughout the state. This was a role he cherished. During this time, he was instrumental in starting the Pension Board for pastors in the Churches of God. Darrell also played a role in establishing the Foundation of the Great Lakes Conference, Churches of God, where he served as President of the Foundation until his retirement in 2011. Darrell has served the denomination and community in various capacities. Within the Churches of God, he was the overseer of Camp Otyokwah in Butler, Ohio, as well as serving on the Board of Trustees for Winebrenner Village. He was influential in the sale of Winebrenner Village to Blanchard Valley Hospital, which subsequently became Birchaven Retirement Village. Darrell served as a member of the Board of Trustees for both Winebrenner Theological Seminary and The University of Findlay, being honored as a Trustee Emeritus for both institutions. Within the community, Darrell was a founding member of the Hancock County Metropolitan Housing Authority, serving as its first President. He has also been an active member of College First Church of God since 1973. Darrell enjoyed working in his yard and flower beds, spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, attending The University of Findlay athletic events, and was a lifelong St. Louis Cardinals fan. In 2011, Darrell was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. After much thought and discussion with his family, he made the commitment to become an active advocate for patients and their families; with his own journey being chronicled in the documentary “Instead of Your Name.” Darrell was active in the Alzheimer’s Association of Northwest Ohio and traveled to both Columbus, Ohio and Washington D.C. to meet with legislators regarding this terrible disease. As with so many before him, the disease eventually took him from us before a cure was found. The family would like to thank the nurses and staff at Birchaven for their loving care and compassion to Darrell during his last months, as well as special thanks to so many of his friends for their love and loyalty over the years. There are far too many to name. Darrell is survived by his wife of 62 years, Alberta (Bowen) Prichard; three daughters, Marsha Prichard, Pam (Kevin) Jenkins and Deb (Jim) Ebert, all of Findlay; grandchildren, Lisa (Nathan) Heath, Sylvania, OH, Elisha (Rick) Mead, Findlay, OH, John (Natalie) Jenkins, Findlay, OH, Austin Fox, Columbus, OH, and Kaden Ebert, Findlay, OH, as well as eight (8) great-grandchildren. Darrell’s adoring sisters, Lucille (Prichard) Collins and Sylvia (Jerry) Burch, both of Farmington, Missouri also survive him. He was predeceased by his parents, Sylvester and Viola Prichard, as well as a niece and two nephews. Visitation services will be held at Coldren-Crates Funeral Home, Findlay, on Monday, June 20, 2016 from 2:00-4:00 p.m. and 6:00-8:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held at College First Church of God on Tuesday, June 21, 2016 at 11:00 a.m., with a time of visitation at the church one hour prior to the service. Pastor William Reist will be officiating, with burial immediately following at Maple Grove Cemetery in Findlay. Memorial contributions can be made in Darrell’s name to the “Darrell and Alberta Prichard Fund for Alzheimer’s Association, Northwest Ohio” through the Findlay-Hancock County Community Foundation, as well as to College First Church of God. We knew it was coming, but not so soon as this. Blessings and prayers to all of you as you complete the journey Darrell began. How many were his accomplishments, but none so great as his home in the Church Triumphant, where he is and where we will find him on that great day.
Love to you, Bob and Judie
