printable version

James A. Shafer, 89, of Findlay passed away at Fox Run Manor on Monday, March 16, 2020. He was born in Findlay to the late Emery David and Florence Marie (Mix) Shafer. He married Carolyn Jane Fouts on October 26, 1951 and she preceded him in death on October 30, 2003. Jim is survived by their three daughters: Debra Lynn (Jim) Kulaga of Carmel, IN, and Jane Ann (Jack) Hamilton and Nancy Sue (David) Wisner, both of Findlay; six grandchildren: Chris Kulaga of Westfield, IN, Pam (Dan) O'Dea of Baltimore, MD, Erin (Chris) Cupples of Bluffton, OH, Laura (Ted) Welsh of Jenera, OH, Adrienne (Chase) Pennell of Plainfield, IL, and Jase (Chelsea Kelley) Wisner of Findlay, OH; 11 great-grandchildren; and very dear friend, Sally Buis. He was also preceded in death by three brothers: Paul, Rodney, and Daniel Shafer. Jim was a 1948 graduate of Findlay High School and graduated from the Art Institute of Pittsburgh (draftsman) in 1949. He served in the Air Force from 1950-51 during the Korean Conflict. He worked with his father and brother, Paul at Shafer Construction where he was both a carpenter and draftsman. In retirement, Jim worked for Coldren-Crates Funeral Homes; his dignity and integrity were attributes that served many families in their time of loss. In every way, Jim was always a true gentleman. He was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church, Livewire Sunday School Class, the Masonic Lodge, Shriners, Keystone Cops (18 years), Gideons, Pioneer Auto Club, Antique Auto Club of America, Loinel Train Collectors' Club, Hancock Historical Museum, and Friends of the Parks. He enjoyed woodworking, antique cars, and Lionel model trains, and had a unique collection of clocks and watches. Due to health and safety considerations, the family will hold a private funeral at COLDREN-CRATES FUNERAL HOME with Pastor Tom Mellott officiating. Burial will follow in Maple Grove Cemetery. The family is also in consideration of a Celebration of Jim's life being held at a date to be determined (following all public restrictions). Memorials may be made to St. Paul's Church Endowment Fund or to a charity of the donor's choice. Online condolences can be shared with the family by visiting coldrencrates.com.

Sorry to hear about Jim, He and Paul were good friends of Dads and then I got to know him a bit. When I told him who I was he would always grin. Now I know how I got put in the Keystone Cop paddy wagon when I was young. I'm sure Jim,Dad, and Paul are all together again. I would always stop and talk to Jim when he had the Whippet out. Jim made a difference no matter where he was or what he was doing, and I'm grateful for that. He made the world a better place.

Debbie, Jane, Nancy, and families:

My heart is aching right along with yours! Jim was so special to me and I know we're all going to miss him terribly. Every time I think of him, I can see him having a good belly laugh over something--I will never forget the twinkle in his eye when it was something ornery!

Please know that my thoughts and prayers are with you as you grieve, and especially for peace in the midst of it.

I knew Jim through FRM as his nurse. It was a pleasure to care for him. He was so gracious and kind, and he knew exactly what he wanted when it was his time to move to his heavenly home. I was particularly touched by the attentiveness of his beautiful family. May the Lord bring you peace during this time of loss. 🤗🙏🏼❤️
